China Roses – ‘Piedaterres’

Adelaide pop-rap duo China Roses have dropped their latest single with a sound ever so familiar to that of fellow Radelaidian Allday and Brissy artist Mallrat.

‘Piedaterres’ is an uplifting track inspired by love and appreciation for those in your life who believe in the artistry you’re creating.

“It’s written around the theme of surrounding yourself with people that believe in you, and encourage you to fulfil your potential. It also mentions reacting to success in a humble manner and taking the time to appreciate those who helped you get to where you are,” China Roses said.

Rapper/vocalist Jessica Fisher wrote this song in the very early stages of the China Roses project. Other half of the duo, producer Pietro Filippone knew it was, and still is, some of the best work she has written.

Filippone was actually in Lebanon without Internet when Fisher sent over the tracks. Trying to distinguish their sound proved to be a challenge at first, but a series of fluke accidents led them down the right path.

“When I got back, I tried writing some music to match the lyrics but everything I wrote didn’t seem to capture the feeling of Jess’s vocals. I wrote about three or four different songs before I came to the result we’ve released.

“I remember I was about five minutes into writing the piano chords for this track when I hit save on my session and accidentally overwrote the previous version I had worked on. It must’ve been a blessing in disguise because it forced me to start from scratch and finish the track,” Filippone said.

There’s a really nice balance between the playful synth rhythms and moody undertones of thick basslines. This kind of sound is definitely on trend and a great step forward for the Aussie rap scene.

‘Piedaterres’ is available everywhere now including Spotify & Apple Music.

Litche x Nrthn – ‘Winter’

Since teaming up with Woodes on their collaboration ‘Voyage’, Litche is back with another slow burner that simmers nicely into an open wave of electronic beauty.

‘Winter’ features the vocals and poetic vision of Sydney producer/songwriter Nrthn, aka Sam Sakr, and is a track that delves deep into the personal experiences of a relationship; the reminiscence of special moments.

“When something I care about ends whether it is a relationship, musical endeavour, or friendship, I tend to only vividly remember the end of it. ‘Winter’ is about the rare moment of reminiscing those ‘moments in the middle’ easily forgotten, and wanting them to be what you remember from it,” Nrthn said.

The track starts really emotively with minimal productions, but once it drops it unleashes a heavy swelling of what can only be paralleled to that unnerving feeling of loss.

Newcastle producer Litche met Nrthn four years ago at music school, and quickly realised they shared a lot of common interests as far as music was concerned.

“Our flow of ideas felt so natural, staying equally in tune with each other throughout every part of the creative process seemed effortless” – Litche said

‘Winter’ is ready to stream across all platforms now including Spotify & Apple Music.

Akurei – ‘Photophobia’

2017 saw Brisbane artist Akurei release two tracks that earned some really great online success. This year comes the arrival of a brand new Akurei release, which gravitates towards electronic angst in a rather ethereal way.

‘Photophobia’ is a track that offers a very insightful look into the experiences of a debilitating migraine, of which Akurei has suffered greatly since his teenage years.

Research became a major part of his quest to find resolve with the issue, and as a result he discovered the works of neurologist Oliver Sacks.

“Oliver Sacks wrote two books which really changed the way I view migraines; ‘Hallucinations’ and ‘Migraine’. They both cover a lot, but what really moved me was his view on the visual aura that accompanies migraines, and its influence on art, divine encounters, and purpose for the person who experiences it,” he said.

With this in mind, Akurei put pen to paper and shared his reflections of a rather troubling episode.

“Photophobia is about the whole experience that comes with it; the aching in your skull, the sensitivity to light, the nostalgia, and the insight you get about whatever it is that’s playing on your mind while you’re out for 6 hours” he said.

This electronic-R&B sonic exploration was further enhanced by co-producer and good friend Golden Vessel.

It wasn’t all smooth sailing on this collaboration though! Akurei had his backpack stolen overnight, which had his laptop and hard drive in it. In a crazy turn of events, the hard drive was retrieved the next morning, but the song had to be pieced back together from the early demos.

“I started this song about a month before I had my backpack stolen overnight. It had my laptop, headphones and hard drive in it. I actually found my hard drive in the street the next morning, which in an odd way is incredibly lucky. We had to piece the song back together from this one early bounce of the demo, an iPhone recording of my guitar parts, and my vocal parts. Max (Golden Vessel) co-produced this track with me and really pulled through on the drum and bass parts. Working with Max is always an easy process, we generally see to eye-to-eye on what we think is cool for the projects we’re working on, and we can be honest with each other without offence.” – Akurei

‘Photophobia’ is available everywhere now including Spotify & Apple Music.

Husky – ‘Can’t Shake It Off’ (ft. Nat Conway)

Sydney producer Husky has teamed up with X-Factor 2015 alumni Nat Conway, and the result is a summer-infused deep disco track called ‘Can’t Shake It Off’.

Opening with those sexy party vibes comes a very Sneaky Sound System-inspired track, and the perfect addition to any summer playlist.

Miss Conway sizzles on vocals and Husky’s dirty synth-heavy productions really bring out the best in this collaboration.

“As soon as I had the basic idea for this song I knew it would suit Nat and her vibe. She loved it and sent back an amazing idea that was very easy to work with, and was exactly what I had in mind,” Husky said.

Husky speaks very highly of the vocalist, praising her talents both as a writer and singer.

“I always love working with Nat Conway. She has to be one of the most talented pop and house writers I have had the pleasure of working with, and I am always very proud of our results,” Husky said.

There is a lot if international appeal with this track, with a sure-fire life far beyond the Australian summer. Hot top: when you press play on this song, you must have a cocktail in hand.

‘Can’t Shake It Off’ is available everywhere now including Spotify & Apple Music, with thanks to Bobbin Head Music, and it also comes with remixes from Alaia & Gallo, Mark Di Meo and a “Club Edit” from the man himself.

Benji Lewis

PROFILE:
Name: Benji Lewis
Location: Melbourne, Australia
StyleElectronic, Chill, Ambient
InfluencesMatt Corby, James Blake, Gnash, Lapsley

ARTIST BIO:
Benji Lewis is a singer/songwriter out of Melbourne who grew up in an Italian family surrounded by many different forms of music; both of his parents were singers in their younger years, his mum was a lover of the ballads, his dad a fan of the classics, his sisters had a strong attraction to RnB and his brother was into rock. Benji’s family saw that he had an incredible natural talent, and encouraged his passion for music and singing from an early age right through until today.

“When I was in my later teens, I found myself drawn to the emotion and beauty in acoustic music. Whether it was some piano or an acoustic guitar with a vocal part, I just loved the emotion and beauty it could sometimes bring, and how it could sweep you up and take you somewhere else entirely” – Benji Lewis

When it came to writing his own music, Benji wanted to bring the emotion, feeling and beauty from that style to the electronic music of today, drawing inspiration from James Blake as the direction of where he wanted his sound & style to go.

In March 2016, Benji Lewis released his debut Hearts & Halos EP, showcasing a stunning four-track collection of songs he wrote and recorded with Jan Skubiszewski and MSquared Productions. The ep’s tracks were written in the dark months after Benji’s mother lost her battle with cancer in 2012, and this heartfelt emotion can be heard in each and every word he sings – and in such a beautifully powerful way too

“My mum always believed in me and what I was doing with my singing and music, and since loosing her I have become even more focused, determined and driven to go as far as I possibly can with it” – Benji Lewis

Off the back of Benji’s Hearts & Halos EP, he signed with music artist management agency Mammal Sounds, and is now eager and excited about moving into the next phase of his career. He’s hoping to be able to work with a variety of producers from all across the globe, and he’s excited to learn more about the intricacies of the music industry as he continues to evolve his sound with each new project.

“I hope to work with people who can help create music that means something, music that makes people feel something” – Benji Lewis

2017 saw the release of Benji’s brand new single ‘Drift’, which was produced & mixed by his Mammal Sounds management buddy Golden Vessel. Since its release in February it has collected over 6 million streams on Spotify and over 2 million streams on Apple Music, and it’s not looking like it’ll be slowing down anytime soon.

In July 2017 Benji releases his new 7-track ep “Home For Now” which has been gaining quite a lot of momentum across Spotify & Apple Music, while also reviving praise and admiration from online media and audiences all over the globe.

“The title of the EP came from all of the changes I was going through; packing up my life and moving from place to place with my friend Mirella. She has always helped and guided me through the years. We talked about moving around a lot, and to look at it in a way that no matter where I am, I look at where I was as Home. So no matter where I am, I always say to myself, “this is home for now” as a way of grounding myself for however long I am in that place.” – Benji Lewis

Close Counters -‘Soulacoasta’

Nothing beats those funky soul-filled rhythms of the 70’s, so it’s with great pleasure that Close Counters today deliver a 12-song instrumental mixtape called ‘Soulacoasta’.

Beat makers Finn Rees and Allan McConnell created this body of work whilst on their gap year travelling throughout Europe.

“Whilst visiting record stores in London, Paris, Berlin and Amsterdam we uncovered some deep cuts of rare 70s groove records, which inspired us to experiment with a more disco-boogie tinged style.

“We created a series of beats built around some samples found on these records and experimented with thematically connecting the songs on the mixtape so that they flow from one to other,” Close Counters said.

It’s impossible to not feel the infections rhythms flow right through you, even transport you to a scene from the Netflix series ‘The Get Down’.

There is certainly an air of hip-hop coming through the mixtape, and for a couple of Generation Z kids, this shows their maturity in musical taste.

Exploring the nostalgia of 70s hip-hop opens up for genre blurring today. In fact, this mixtape is very reminiscent of Kaytranda and Harvey Sutherland.

“The main theme of ‘Soulacoasta’ revolves around a short sample of a full horn and string section from an Italian instrumental jazz album. This has been mixed with punchy hip-hop drums and bouncy synthesiser bass lines,” they said.

As an added bonus, a music video for the title-track has dropped, and it too falls in the old school world blending some vintage and new styles together to create a very fun and feel-good visual.

“The video is about a middle-aged man living an unbelievably joyful life. Throughout a day, his perception of reality is challenged and his delusions begin to reveal themselves,” they said.

On working with the duo, the video’s director Sanjiv Gopal said he knew exactly how to bring it to life.

“Having worked with Close Counters on a previous short film of mine, I was pretty eager to continue collaborating with the guys. When they first showed me ‘Soulacoasta’ it blew my mind, and I pretty much knew straight away what the next step in our work together would be,” Gopal said.

‘Soulacoasta’ is available now via SoundCloud and Bandcamp.

Litche – ‘Voyage’ (ft. Woodes)

It’s been almost a year since we’ve heard from Newcastle producer Litche, aka Sam Litchfield, but it has been a time for creation.

His respect for songstress Woodes was what brought him to the spotlight, with his remix of ‘Rise’ clocking plays across all platforms.

There had been a few conversations about making something original together, then back in June 2017 Litche and Woodes decided to have a go at writing together, and that’s when ‘Voyage’ started to take shape.

This is also just the first single off Litche’s upcoming debut EP, and it channels a rather dark soundscape with Woodes’ sincerity coming through her signature floaty vocals.

“Elle started to play with melodic ideas and writing down some rough lyric ideas. After about an hour Elle had worked out the vocal melody and we also recorded tonnes of atmospheric vocal bits that we layered together and messed around with. Before long we knew something special was forming,” Litche said.

The two worked seamlessly together and their creative flow is undeniable. With Woodes’ song writing continually getting stronger it becomes evident how focused and story driven this track is.

“To me, ‘Voyage’ is about a person letting the humbling and mystical aspects of nature help take them on a journey of reflection through their personal desires and wants of the past, present and future,” Litche said.

This track is a very strong indication of what the upcoming EP will feel like. Hopefully this isn’t the last collaboration we get to hear from these two fine Australian artists.

“I wrote this with Sam over a couple sessions by the beach in Sydney. I found Sam’s Music through soundcloud and was really drawn to the atmospheres & the world he creates through his production. I was keen on seeing how my voice could fit into that.

Our first session together we had only a few pieces of gear and our laptops and a couple hours before my flight. Having a set amount of variables made us focus on what we could do with vocal manipulation as a core instrument in Voyage. We recorded a bunch of lyrical chapters which evolved and grew with the production. It began to form into a little journey.

When I write I picture a film playing in my head. To me this song is post-dusk blue. Fires by the beach with friends on warm nights. Finding shapes in clouds. Familiar friends and new connections.” – Woodes

MORILLA – ‘Love Me’

Australian artist MORILLA is off to a ripper start in 2018 with a track that is well on trend with RnB-trap-electronica.

‘Love Me’ channels those intricate beat stylings of Flume, and the smooth vocal switches of The Weeknd, giving those late-night trap vibes a workout.

Enlisting the producing prowess of Aussie producer cln ensured the intensity of the demo reflected exactly what MORILLA was envisioning.

Even with the first demo he sent me he nailed it, and it got better and better after each time he worked on it,” MORILLA said.

The song may sound like a bit of a dis track but in fact, it isn’t. Written during a time when MORILLA was evaluating his relationships and friendships, it ended up being a time of evaluating his own self-worth.

“The intention of this song was for me to sing about my experience, and to hopefully empower people the way I felt empowered when I was writing it,” MORILLA said.

‘Love Me’ is an absolute banger and will inject that fire you need for a cracking new year.

JVLY – ‘Ache EP’

With two singles leading the charge for this debut ep, it’s no wonder Newcastle producer JVLY has found his stride.

The ‘Ache EP’ is a 20-minute transformative experience that takes you on a sonic journey of electronic beats and sweet jazz inspired melodies.

Visuals are integral to JVLY’s writing process and in fact, this whole EP was created with one vision in mind which brought together its cohesiveness and energy.

“I made all of these songs with the thought of a visual in mind. If you’ve got a good idea of what a song might look like if it was translated to a screen, then it kind of becomes easier to steer it where you’re trying to go,” JVLY said.

Normally JVLY works alone but featuring the vocals of both Chester and SARAI opened his eyes up to the possibilities of collaboration.

“It’s weird because the whole project was probably like 75% complete before I even started working with anyone. The songs were written but they needed something. Sarai and Chester were the first two people I ever actually properly collaborated with. I’m used to putting things together alone, so having them involved and realising how aligned both of their inputs were with my vision was really interesting,” JVLY said.

SARAI brings such a sensual warmth and familiarity to the tracks ‘Stone’, ‘Drowning’ and ‘Void’, as her effortless vocals elevate the productions and vision.

Teaming up with Chester Watson on ‘Namek’ contrastingly shows their psych-electronica, and is definitely a track with its own vibe.

Eric Sharp – ‘Eric Sharp & Friends EP’

With two lead singles already under his belt it’s now time for Eric Sharp to round things out in one symphonic release.

Over the past four years, Sharp has only released individual singles, so the ‘Eric Sharp & Friends EP’ is a momentous achievement in his career.

Featuring hit tracks ‘Too Much’ and ‘Take This Time’, you now also get to enjoy two more tunes, ‘Call in the Night’ and ‘Some Place I Can Call My Own’. Three of the tracks feature his good mate Zhao, with ‘Too Much’ featuring Brooklyn lads French Horn Rebellion.

Eric Sharp has come a long way since his successful DJ spinning days in the underground house and techno scene, but they certainly shaped his productions for a more focused sound today.

“For the ‘Eric Sharp & Friends EP’ I left that creative constraint behind and just focused on making music as an ends in and of itself. Those who follow my original work will know that collaboration is a big part of my process. I find that there is a nearly magical energy exchange in co-creating music with other artists whom I share a wavelength with,” Sharp said.

The four-track body of work shows a softer more moodier side to Sharp’s personality both as a producer and a writer, with a creative flow geared towards the philosophy of surrealist painters like Dali, Magritte and Miro.

“Surrealism involves allowing one’s unconscious to manifest itself in one’s work, maintaining an openness to explore whatever flows through oneself. Because of this I often don’t know what a song is going to be about until halfway through writing it,” he said.

The EP was developed both in his home studio and remotely, with writing sessions at Drew Kramer (Wild & Free) and Zhao’s studios, where the focus was primarily around developing ideas.

“It’s hard for me to take in my productions with a fresh ear, but hopefully on first listen people will hear the tracks as warm, inviting, and hypnotic. My goal is to draw people in my world sonically to have their own experience, and for this purpose, an EP is a better avenue than a single would have been,” he said.

When you next see Eric Sharp live, listen closely as you will hear snippets of these four singles filter through his set.

“Ironically, now that I have the final masters I find myself sneaking these songs into my DJ sets quite regularly even though they are pretty different from most of what I mix,” he said.

ARTIST BIO
Max Byrne is a producer out of Brisbane, Australia who is making chilled electronic music under the name Golden Vessel.

The 20 year-old songwriter is already creating music at a level of professionalism that many artists strive to reach after working away at their sound for many years. His smooth electronic arrangements of down-tempo beats feature elements of hip-hop, trap and soul, all laced in a pristine lo-fi sheen.

Max used to think he was narrow minded when it came to music, but as his tastes continued to develop and widen, it led to the discovery of synthesizers and the many different styles of electronic music. The idea of music production being an actual form of art really opened his eyes to a whole new world of musical tastes, influences and sounds. He began researching into how some of his musical inspirations created their music, then taking this information and making it work for Golden Vessel.

“I want to convey in my music everything I love about music. Whether it’s incorporating different genres into one song, or different processes and homages to different times” – Max Byrne

Golden Vessel kicked off 2015 with an incredible new single called ‘Control’, which saw him working with Caleb Hodges from Australian band Art of Sleeping. He then released his second single for the year, titled ‘Borrowed Time’ it featured the stunning vocals and lyric-work of Brisbane singer/songwriter Tiana Khasi. Shortly after this release Golden Vessel joined the Mammal Sounds management family and really started to focus on making a career out of music.

In 2016 Golden Vessel released quite an impressive 6-track debut ep called ‘Before Sleep EP’, which saw him working with some very talented Australia artists such as Lastlings, Tom Eggert (of MTNS), OKBADLANDS, Abraham Tilbury and Woodes.

The ep’s three singles received premieres with Rolling Stone, THUMP and Billboard, and they each won the support of the team over at Triple J with airplay on main radio and Unearthed, as well as being made Triple J Unearthed’s Feature Artist in May. He was then invited to play the Triple J Unearthed showcase stage at BIGSOUND 2016, which lead to a partnership with New World Artists for bookings & tours within Australia/Asia.

Golden Vessel then kicked-off 2017 in strong form, signing his first record deal with Exist Recordings (founded by The Kite String Tangle) for Australasia, and shortly after released his debut single with them titled ‘Tell The-Girl’ featuring his friend Emerson Leif on vocals. This single was added to full rotation on Triple J and won the praise and admiration of online media & audiences all around the globe.

In June 2017 Golden Vessel released his next single ‘Shoulders’ which featured his good friends elkkle & Mallrat on vocals. This song was also added to rotation on Triple J and has since been received extremely well by his domestic & international audience. This single also came with news of his second ep which is titled “Right/Side” and will be seeing its release in September 2017.

Emerson Leif x Golden Vessel – ‘Hesitate’

Brisbane artist Emerson Leif has enlisted the creative mind of good friend Golden Vessel for his debut single ‘Hesitate’, which poses some of life’s most important questions.

Years ago, ‘Hesitate’ began as a 30-second sample of Leif’s voice, and always had this sense of possibility attached to it.

“I had loaded all these effects on it until the vocal sounded more like an organ. The sample always felt like it had possibilities, and I knew there was a song there every time I listened to it,” Leif said.

Golden Vessel and Emerson Leif have been friends for years, and Leif has also worked on a few of Golden Vessel’s tracks in the past (‘Control’ & ‘Tell The-Girl’), so it just felt right for the two to connect and work Leif’s debut release.

“Max (Golden Vessel) and I have been writing music together for a long time, and so it made sense to work on the track with him. I love the unique sounds that Max brings to production and we both had a similar vision for the song,” he said.

At the time ‘Hesitate’ was written, Leif’s life was picturesque, yet the emptiness he felt and had always wrestled with, plagued him.

“I found myself feeling very alone and without purpose. I could not accept that we just exist: eat, sleep, work, repeat. We are sold a kind of ‘happiness’ like it’s something we can work towards but what’s on offer is fleeting, if at all,” he said.

This particular track was the beginning of a journey for Leif as he began to explore life’s greatest philosophies, most notably the idea of God.

“I had many questions about life but the greatest question was one of God. Or better yet, one for God. “Are you there?” Honestly, religion just felt so tired and insular. I wanted something tangible. I wanted to find truth. The idea of searching is perhaps most terrifying, because what if one finds nothing,” he said.

As you tune into the lyrics of this beauty, let the rhythms hypnotise you into a meditation of open mindedness.

“Hesitate came about from these old vocals and acoustic guitar loops that Caleb had recorded years ago. We dug those up and sampled them, and built ‘Hesitate’ around them. This is one of my favourite songs that I’ve ever made and it’s kind of just been sitting on my laptop for over a year. I can’t tell you how happy I am to finally get it out.” – Golden Vessel

Lorde – ‘Dynamite’ (Midnight Pool Party Remix)

It’s been a big year for Australian duo Midnight Pool Party. They put a lot of time and effort into creating their debut ep, ‘Dalliance’, and have been blown away by the amount of support that they are still getting from fans all around the world.

They wanted to end the year with a big thank you to everyone in the best way they know how – with slick, funky, disco-dance, grooves.

“We saw the remix competition for this Lorde track on Triple j Unearthed a few months ago, but at the time were busy working on one of our own singles so we didn’t really think too much of it. We did end up grabbing the stems though, and just recently we found some time have a little play around with them, and this is what we ended up with. We think it turned out pretty dope, and we wanted to share it with everyone.

2017 has been an amazing year for us, and what better way to finish it off than with some funky summer vibes for everyone to enjoy. Thank you for your support this year and keep an eye out for more from us in 2018!” – Midnight Pool Party

Midnight Pool Party’s ‘Dalliance EP’ is available everywhere now including Spotify & Apple Music, and they are back in the studio working on their next ep, so you can rest assured that you’ll be hearing from them again very soon.

JVLY – ‘Void’ (ft. SARAI)

After sharing new single ‘Namek’ featuring Chester Watson last month (the first taste of his upcoming debut ep), Sydney producer JVLY is now ready to give us the ep’s second single ‘Void’, featuring the vocal stylings of Sydney artist SARAI.

‘Void’ is the first song JVLY wrote for this project, which interestingly started off very differently to what it is now.

“There’s this spot I always go in my car with my little MIDI keyboard to start ideas, and this one was the same. I’d put the outro section together first and it was heading in more of a house direction, but then the rest of the song started to take shape and it morphed in to what it is now,” JVLY said.

The cracklings of vinyl set the mood with eerie samples cutting through in a ghost-like chant. There’s a very urban feel to this track as it develops, and the R&B tones to SARAI’s voice create a layer of mystery to the gritty track.

This is the first time these two have collaborated, but it seems their time together was productive and there may just be more where this came from.

“We finished this and another tune from the project called ‘Stone’. We just clicked. Her vocals are so dynamic and the arrangements are insane; she is crazy talented,” JVLY said.

SARAI also speaks highly of JVLY’s vision, so the two are clearly a musical match made in heaven.

”JVLY’s sound is both subtle and yet a strong current of ethereal, electronic vibrations. His perspective is refreshing as it is both inclusive yet uniquely artistic, and I feel honoured to work with him and feature on it,” SARAI said.

Twin Caverns – ‘Crimes’

Sydney band, Twin Caverns have been relatively quiet of late. They haven’t released any new music in just over a year, but this week they share a brand new beauty, ‘Crimes’.

Lou Millar and Michael Macias have just recently invited bassplayer Chuffy Smith into their little crew, as they continue to balance electronica with more organic, humanised instrumentation.

While we may not have heard any new material from Twin Caverns over the last 12 months, their online presence has continued to grow, collecting over 8 million streams across Spotify since their last release, and their track ‘Undiscover’ was also featured on US TV series ’SUITS’.

Written and produced between Sydney and Canberra, ‘Crimes’ pairs syncopated rhythms with a stripped back, bluesy feel. Millar’s vocals add a sultry drawl to the soulful and expressive licks that any great trip-hop song has.

We love working with a field recorder as the basis for new sounds, especially percussion. We started off throwing around a whole bunch of sticks and branches to see what we could capture. What initially began as sounding like an on old Western soundtrack score, grew into something totally different once Lou’s vocals were put down”

‘Crimes’ is about the small acts of hurt we commit towards each other and ourselves.

“We want sharp feelings – pleasure is pain is pleasure is pain”

Tyson Kraft – ‘Haunt Me’ (ft. Tiff Fung)

Melbourne producer and songwriter Tyson Kraft has been through a lot in the past year, from the lows of being involved in a shocking motorcycle accident, to the highs of teaching children in disadvantaged communities abroad all while completing university.

‘Haunt Me’ is the first track Tyson Kraft has released since those experiences, and is a moving ode to the people who have supported him along the way.

“For a fleeting moment, I thought about stopping music all together. This song reflects my appreciation for the wonderful people that have come into my life and helped me to flourish and grow as both a musician and a person,” Kraft said.

The enchanting vocals of Tiff Fung truly enhance the lyrical content, and her purposeful singing is a testament to the chemistry she shares with Kraft in the studio.

“It’s always special recording with Tyson, and this project in particular was filled with vast creativity and exchange of ideas. The writing process was smooth as we really complement each other’s strengths and weaknesses. We were constantly experimenting and coming up with ways to further develop and refine,” Fung said.

‘Haunt Me’ is a highly personal, yet relatable song that reflects Kraft’s experiences with past love and losing loved ones. The desire to be loved is a recurring theme in Kraft’s music as he learns to balance and understand love alongside a career in music.

As a musician, Tyson derives inspiration from blending the genres of contemporary RnB and hip-hop with carefully placed electronic elements, as well as from his own unique life experiences that have helped shape both his sound and his kind-hearted character. But being a successful musician means different things to different artists, and for Kraft it’s about identifying the expectations and ensuring his self-expression is never compromised.

“I used to feel this restlessness about having to push myself to no ends to make it. This year, I am just doing me. Expressing myself, trying new things creatively, connecting with new people and just enjoying every step of this incredible journey. For a period of time, I had lost sight of why I was actually making music, and forgot the simple fact that music brings me so much happiness, and is a gift that I can share with lots of people,” Kraft said.

Earlier this year, Kraft travelled to Thailand for a working placement, and while he was there he taught Grade 1 and Grade 2 blind students how to read and speak English.

“I would like to dedicate this song to my amazing students at the Bangkok School for the Blind. Thank you for showing me how incredible you all are, and how you deal so effortlessly with challenges and setbacks. In the end, I think you all taught me more than I could ever teach you,” Kraft said.

Eric Sharp – ‘Too Much’ (ft. French Horn Rebellion)

Last month we were treated to the chilled-dance sounds of ‘Take This Time’ by Los Angeles producer Eric Sharp, and now you better get ready for a pulsating dance floor filler.

‘Too Much’ sees Eric Sharp collaborate with two of his favourite people in music: French Horn Rebellion and Drew Kramer. This is the second single from his forthcoming ep “Eric Sharp & Friends”, which is due for release in January 2018 via Little Assembly.

Inspiration from Australian artists RUFUS and Flight Facilities formed the basis of this track’s sonic soundscape, allowing Sharp and Kramer to get in the zone pretty quickly and write something special.

“Drew is an incredibly talented producer-songwriter, and a member of Wild & Free. The day we wrote the bulk of ‘Too Much’ he had just added a bunch of new analogue synths to his home studio. After laying down some chords, drums, and melodies we wrote a vocal hook. It was pretty straightforward,” Sharp said.

Encouraged by Kramer to think big, Sharp recalled his conversations with French Horn Rebellion, toying around with potential collaboration ideas.

“For years we’d talked about putting something together after we played the same show at SXSW in 2013. Up until this point, I hadn’t made anything that I thought would be a fit for him stylistically, but this seemed like it could work. I sent it over with the hook and the song idea. Something told me that Robert would relate to my experience,” Sharp said.

The song details that classic boy meets girl encounter and learning to harness those initial intense feelings of attraction.

“I was totally spun out over a girl I’d met, and was in that giddy, near-manic stage of brand new obsession and infatuation, but also afraid to come on too strong and screw things up. Spoiler alert: I came on too strong and screwed things up,” Sharp said.

Robert Perlick-Molinari of French Horn Rebellion adds such a distinctive vocal tone to the track, matching perfectly with the disco-pop productions and ever so beautiful French Horn melodies in the bridge. The contrast is clear with a real light-hearted nature to the overall jam.

“The first time I heard this track, Eric sent me a beat and a little chorus idea asking if I’d like to sing it. We had talked about doing a song together for years but when he sent this one over I knew it was finally the right time; I was instantly hooked. I love the final product and it was a real pleasure to sing and play horn on. Making those horn arrangements was epic,” French Horn Rebellion said.

Chores – ‘Losing You’

New Zealand is certainly home to some very talented artists, including Auckland producers Chores who have dropped their brand new single, ‘Losing You’.

Chores have predominantly been a house act, but switched up the tempo on this single. The electro-pop inspired track has a catchy melody brought to life by vocalist Jess Pollard. While it is bright and edgy in production choices, the overall feel is rather dark & moody.

“The song is about desperately clutching onto someone who you believe to be becoming distant. It also explores how people can get caught up within their own emotions when they feel they are losing someone, when in reality, it might just be their own perceptions,” Chores said.

While the producers continue their quest to collaborate with Tyrone Lyndqvist from RUFUS, their work will always impress and attract many artists.

Oscar Oscar – ‘HIMEJI’

Since the release of his hugely successful track ‘See Myself’ back in September, Brisbane producer Oscar Oscar is now ready to share a new melodious track of pure electronica.

This instrumental piece was written and recorded while Oscar Oscar was staying in Kobe, Japan with a friend’s host family. There may have even been a sneaky collaboration with one of the family members!

“The family was pretty large and there was this little kid I stayed with and every day I’d make an effort to write some music with him there. Low key it was a bit of a collaboration because he would always just sing and beat the crap out his toy drum. I’d nick a few rhythms and ideas from him,” he said.

There was no real purpose or structure to the initial song; it was merely a reflection and honest depiction of how he felt on a trip to Himeji Castle.

“In all honesty, at this point in time I don’t think I’m very good at meticulously planning what a song is going to be in advance or sticking to any sort of structure. Often times I just get what I’m feeling at that particular point in time, and this is how I was feeling in November of 2016,” he said.

The track feels like a fantasy soundscape with it floating flutes and warping fat bass lines. It’s a chiller and one to press play on when you need to zen out.

MTNS – ‘Like A Stone EP’

Brisbane electronic group MTNS has been trickling releases from their “Like A Stone EP” for a few months now, and today the full EP is here.

Their biggest hit ‘Slow Motion’ has now racked up over 17,000 SoundCloud plays with ‘Waves’ also pulling healthy numbers.

The EP was recorded in LA with brothers and good friends of MTNS, CAMBO and Louis Bartolini.

“Our time spent in California was inspiring. It was an amazing experience getting involved in a music scene outside of our own,” MTNS said.

The songs are inspired by their families, friends and faith, and for a lyrical perspective, they are based on a reflection of life from hindsight.

“These songs reflect the joining of our histories and differences. Through the process of building this EP we’ve learned a lot about collaboration in music and experienced first-hand its power to bring people together,” MTNS said.

The MTNS soundscape has developed since their first EP ‘Salvage’ three years ago, stepping away from the computer and using natural elements to blend in with the electronic productions.

“A big part of our new development was experimenting with sounds and attempting to bring the ‘live, natural and band feel’ to the electronic scene. Our first songs were all based 100% on the computer, so it was great to get out of the box and manipulate natural elements by blending them with the electronic sounds,” MTNS said.

Two new songs on this EP are ‘Aes Sedai’ and ‘Like A Stone’, each rounding out a cohesive pop-electronic vibe. There’s angst and drama across the four tracks, which hit you hard and strike with every synth clash.

This newfound sonic direction for MTNS is a promising step forward in establishing themselves as major players in the music space, and will hopefully inspire others to follow suite.

“Our hope is that anyone listening to our music will feel inspired to create and connect in the same way we have,” MTNS said.

PROFILE
Name: Callan Alexander
Location: Brisbane, Australia
Style: Electronic
Influences: Flying Lotus, ODESZA, Kite String Tangle, Chrome Sparks

ARTIST BIO
At 22 years of age, Brisbane producer Callan Alexander, aka cln, has clearly made his mark in the electronic music industry, and if 2015/2016 is any indication of the calibre of work to come, then strap yourself in because you’re in for a real treat.

Having moved to the sunshine state from South Africa back in 2009, Callan has been able to hone his skills and direction as an artist, all the while pursuing his law and science studies at university.

There’s no denying Callan has achieved a lot in a short space of time, especially since the release of his two ep’s, ‘Sideways’ (2014) & ‘Found’ (2015), along with his two most recent singles, ‘Mist’ & ‘Owls’ – one of which has just hit 1 million plays on Spotify with a few others following closely behind.

Callan signed to Paradigm Talent Agency in 2016 for bookings & tours in the USA/ASIA, which soon after lead to his first North American tour in September; a massive nine shows across 14 days where he supported The Chainsmokers at Red Rocks Amphitheatre alongside San Holo, Shaun Frank and Tep No, supported the Keys N Krates in Toronto alongside Lunice, Araabmuzik and River Tiber, as well as performing at Up North and Nocturnal Wonderland festivals.

Back on home soil, cln has supported the likes of The Aston Shuffle, Carmada, ODESZA, and Kele Okereke; front-man of UK group Bloc Party.

2017 has so far been a year of exploration for cln as he extends his compositions into unexpected and exciting new areas. After doing a remix of a track called ‘Peace Is My Drug’ by Australian songstress Katie Noonan, she then invited Callan to perform that song live with her at the Queensland Music Awards in Brisbane, which included aerial silk artists performing overhead.

These two artists enjoyed working together so much that they teamed up again to create a collection of diverse electronic music, which was to be performed live across six sold-out performances at Brisbane Powerhouse with the Queensland Ballet as part of their ‘Bespoke’ program, under the creative direction of renowned choreographer Amy Hollingsworth, and artistic director Li Cunxin.

There is talk of a second season of the “Bespoke” performance, so stay tuned for more news on that over the coming months, as well as a digital release of the music written & recorded by cln & Katie Noonan titled ‘Glass Heart’.

cln has recently released a single called ‘Breathe’ through US imprint NEST, the sister agency of Skrillex’s OWSLA label, which also came with remixes from DEVOTED, X&G and Ellie Herring.

We can expect a few more releases from cln before the year is out, and then start hearing snippets of his debut album that is set for release in 2018.

Benji Lewis – ‘Never Mine’

After the triumphant success of his “Home For Now EP”, Melbourne singer-songwriter Benji Lewis took a little trip to California to visit his sister and soak up the sun.

Lucky for us it wasn’t all just R&R. Benji has been busy working on some new material, and with fresh perspective and inspiration, he has a brand new single to share with us this week called ‘Never Mine’, which features the vocal assistance of Los Angeles artist TRACE.

The track came at a time where Benji needed to unload pent up thoughts and emotions from a broken down relationship. It was messy and it wasn’t easy, but soaking up the sea breeze in Venice Beach saw a new bond develop between Benji, TRACE and producer Mike Derenzo.

A writing session between the three was effortless with Derenzo creating the perfect beat and mood, and the perfect blend of vocals coming to light to tell this story.

“When I went into this session with TRACE and Michael Derenzo, I was in a pretty fragile state. It’s a song about realising the facts of a situation; that this person and this love isn’t what they lead you to believe. It’s about dealing with the relationship coming to end and all of the emotions that come with it,” Lewis said.

There is a heaviness to this story that anyone can relate to and a chill to the harmonies, but the earthiness and ethereal electronic vibes resonate very much to the likes of Jhene Aiko.

“The light at the end of this story? Yes it is and will be hard to move on, but that doesn’t mean you should stay in an unhealthy situation. We deserve to feel safe and to feel loved; we deserve better. We deserve someone who chooses us and puts us first. When it comes to love, I am still a believer, but it has to be right,” Lewis said.

2018 is already looking very good for the young artist as he recently announced that he would be making his SXSW debut alongside some top-tier artists. If you’re heading along, be sure to add him to your “must-see” list.

JVLY – Namek (ft. Chester Watson)

Newcastle artist JVLY has enlisted the vocal chops of American rapper Chester Watson to bring you a track that is groovy and gorgeously unusual.

The two linked up over the Internet, and originally JVLY had only sent Chester Watson a beat and a rough idea of the concept.

“We went back and forth for a while and not too long after, he sent me his part and it was exactly what I was hoping for. It’s just cool how we can link up with people on the other side of the world and make stuff,” JVLY said.

Inspired by Tyler the Creator’s 2017 album ‘Flower Boy’, and having just listened to the track ‘Garden Shed’, it was the lyrics “you don’t have to hide” which caught JVLY’s attention.

“I was super keen to sample it, so pretty much straight away I went and chopped that up and started building around it,” he said.

What started off as something really fun turned into an experimental work of instrumental colour.

“I was fiddling around with synths trying to create a dreamy and psychedelic sort of soundscape when I started to like it more and more as it progressed,” he said.

Chester Watson’s wizardry was called upon by JVLY as the track began to take shape. The introspection, writing prowess and delivery are nothing short of genius on ‘Namek’.

This is a song about connecting with someone on a genuine level, and what these two have created is a soundtrack that paints a vivid picture of that story.

Adding the final touches of JVLY’s vocals, guitars and a little bit of restructuring, you are left with a track that flows effortless between melody and lyrics.

Erik Sing – ‘Barely Holding On’ (ft. Sophia Hughes)

Following the release of Erik Sing’s recent debut single ‘Leave You Alone’, a second serving has just dropped featuring UK vocalist Sophia Hughes.

‘Barely Holding On’ is a soulful and sensual jam that will have you writhing between the sheets at the very thought of that special someone.

Erik Sing was on the hunt to collaborate with a new artist on this track, and came across a few covers Hughes had posted.

“She has an amazing voice and I knew straight away I wanted to work with her,” Sing said.

Having met through SoundCloud, Sing sent a demo hoping for a positive response and a new collaborator.

“Within a month she had recorded it,” Sing said.

The song explores the turmoils and insecurities of a relationship, and being pushed to the edge by not knowing where life is headed.

There’s an innocence to Hughes’ storytelling, and her sweet dulcet tones make this track one to add to your late-night playlist.

Night Tales – ‘Move You’

In their own right, Kamaliza and Third Floor have been smashing through 2017 releasing hit singles as solo projects. Now, they’ve joined forces and together they are Night Tales.

The debut single for this Sydney electronic duo is ‘Move You’, a syncopated party starter for the deep underground. This collaborative project is a creative infusion from both their solo projects however injects a little something extra.

“We wanted to create and explore more dance floor focused music, but still stay true to the DNA of our individual projects. The result of this super duo project has enabled us to bring out a more moodier yet passionate side of our creative minds,” Night Tales said.

Lyrically, this song tells the tale of an unrequited love and following your intuition. The duo worked on it for about six months, restructuring the ballad-like composition into something more in line with the electronic genre.

“Our music is fuelled by unspoken emotion. Its almost as if we are discovering what the song is about along the way. Step by step we begin to carve out the characters and qualities of the song that best fit the emotional direction. Where words in our every day life fall short we try to let our music speak” – Night Tales

‘Move You’ is the first of many singles to come from this new project. The duo continues to push themselves to make the best dance music possible, and can’t wait to share their new music with the world.

The Kite String Tangle – ‘This Thing We Got’

It’s already been a huge year for The Kite String Tangle what with a highly talked about Splendour in the Grass set, a debut album, a national tour, an ARIA award nomination and now, a fresh new tune.

Does the guy ever stop?!

‘This Thing We Got’ can be found on The Kite String Tangle’s recently release self-titled album, which he says is his take on a summer tune, and is much less introspective and more light-hearted than his usual songs.

“I wrote this tune right at the very end of the album writing process, and it almost didn’t make the album. It’s got a really Californian feel to me, and it feels like a good cruising road trip song,” he said.

There’s a real 70s type vibe going on with the boppy productions and unexpected grooves, and if you listen closely you will hear a nod to a modernised Mark Ronson-esque horn section.

While writing this song, The Kite String Tangle actually planned it to be 30bpm slower than what you hear now. However, the slower melody didn’t go to waste and is sampled as the chorus. He describes this is as a “song within a song”.

Lyrically, the song is motivated by that honeymoon period feeling and the butterflies you get when you start dating someone new. Who doesn’t love that feeling?!

There are a few dates left on The Kite String Tangle national tour happening this week in Perth and Melbourne, and to give you a taste of what you can expect at one of his shows, TKST is also sharing this official music video of him performing ’This Thing We Got’ at The Tivoli in Brisbane.

‘This Thing We Got’ can be found on The Kite String Tangle‘s self-titled debut album which is available everywhere now via Exist Recordings

The Kite String Tangle is also excited to announce that he will be joining the Sounds Australia Trade Mission to South America next month for a series of showcase performances, after his album debuted at #5 on the Chile iTunes chart.

LuvAbstract – ‘Driveway’

Back in April, Ohio boy LuvAbstract delighted listener’s ears with ‘Risk’, a track that spoke to the YOLO part of our mind. Well, he’s back with a brand new track that is every bit dream-pop electronica, and it is so good.

LuvAbstract is a storyteller, and this time is no different. ‘Driveway’ tells the personal tale of a goodbye that perhaps was a little too premature; something which everyone can indeed relate to.

“This story was written about me. Everyone has been in the situation where they want a few more moments to gain the courage to kiss that person. This song is a representation of how I felt during this date with ‘her’,” he said.

It’s an uplifting song that communicates the innocence of such a powerful moment.

“The song starts off with me driving to her house after our date. I still remember everything from that night. From the song that was playing on my broken radio, to the route we took to her house,” he said.

As the track builds, so too does the anticipation of what’s to come.

“The second verse is the build-up to that perfect first kiss. I nervously walked her to her door, and even though it was only a few steps, it felt like I was walking miles,” he said.

Cue all of the gushy feels.

“I wrote this song in the hopes that listeners could relate to my personal experience,” he said.

cln – ‘The Other Side’

Back In August, Brisbane producer cln delivered the goods with a sizzling track featuring pseudo called ‘Switch Gears’. Well, the maestro is back and this time he’s bringing something super fresh.

Aptly titled ‘The Other Side’ is a song that shows a bit of a new direction for cln. It startled even him at first, but you can’t ignore what feels so right.

“I’ve been making a fairly broad range of music, and initially when I wrote this song I didn’t want to release it because it didn’t sound that much like ‘me’. It has come to grow on me though; I think it’s probably one of the better vocal parts I’ve written,” he said.

Having decided to release it anyway means that cln is no longer confined to a certain style, which is extremely exciting.

“I’d rather make what comes naturally than put myself into a box. That way I have more freedom and can be more honest,” he said.

The productions on this number are out of this stratosphere; quite literally you will be transported to another dimension of crisp internet inspired beats and colourful imagery. While the vocals play a lot with auto tune, it certainly adds an extra element to the aesthetic of the song.

This newfound direction has been set ablaze, and whether you like it or not, cln is proud and hopes for the best.

Eric Sharp – ‘Take This Time’ (ft. Zhao)

LA producer Eric Sharp has teamed up with indie-soul singer Zhao on a new single ‘Take This Time’, which is a delicious cocktail of emotional inspirations, and is just the first peek at Sharp’s forthcoming EP, “Eric Sharp and Friends”.

This is not the first time the two have teamed up. Last year, the duo worked on a track called ‘The Thirst’ which seemed to be the start of a beautiful friendship.

Something the two artists share, apart from musical interest, is their view on the world. Given the recent events of bigotry at high levels of government in the USA, this song was quite the release for them. The lyrics were written in two hours at Zhao’s studio in LA, and have quite the message.

“Take This Time’ speaks directly to the reality that individual closed mindedness is literally costing human lives on a consistent basis. If people could open their minds and hearts more, a much better world is possible. Currently we seem stuck in cycles of hatred and otherness. The song is imbued with a deep sadness around this fact, and a more general poignancy around missed opportunities and unrealized potential,” Sharp said.

“We wrote the song after a conversation about how helpless we felt listening to the news. The arrangement felt “lonely” to me – as well as somewhat ironically cheerful – so I wanted to emphasize that. I think given the way things are going – in our country, in the world – it’s almost irresponsible to ignore what’s going on.” Zhao said.

There is something looming about this track; it’s filled with suspense and stirs images of darkness. It is a deep melodic tune with grit that has a real earthiness to its productions. Sharp has played with the rhythms and percussions, highlighted cymbals, twinkled the synths and grounded the fat bass beats, which if you listen closely, hint at Basement Jaxx’s ‘Where’s Your Head At’.

While there’s a real sexual energy to the pulsating melodies that bring your imagination to a heaving club dance floor, there is also a sense of solace to it.

Third Floor x Olsen – ‘Lost in You’ (ft. Boswell)

Sydney producer Third Floor has teamed up with fellow producer, and friend, Olsen on a track that conjures up all the feelings of a deep love.

‘Lost In You’ features vocals by singer-songwriter Boswell, and plays part of the first instalment of a new series called ‘Dream Funk Vol. 1’. Each time the three artists collaborate, the track will be added to the series, with a follow up release to be dropped early next year.

Boswell’s luscious vocals give that sense of yearning and desire; a real quench for that level of undeniable intimacy.

“The song is about the intense, exciting and apprehensive emotions about falling in love with another at such a rapid rate. Despite our instinctual self-protective measures to hide our feelings, internally we are exhilarated. There is however, an internal conflict of keeping those feelings to ourselves, or being vulnerable and laying them all on the line,” Third Floor said.

There is such a breezy quality to the house productions of this track, and it whisks you away into a haven of fantasy-inspired bass lines and percussion.

“We wanted to create music that was personal, emotive yet grooving and uplifting. The combination of our collaborative sonic expressions resulted in dream like funk sound that instantly transports the listener to a blissful wonderland” he said.

‘Lost In You’ is available everywhere now including Spotify & Apple Music, and if you head over to Soundcloud you can also check out these tidy reworks of by ‘Lost In You’ by Third Floor and Olsen themselves, as well as a high-energy uplifting remix by their good friend DLE.

“This remix was purposely crafted for the poolside/beach bar vibes taking you through to sunset. A slight increase in tempo, garnished with a side of mallets and sprinkled with some vintage jazz piano sounds, its now ready to be served” – Olsen

“I wanted to shift our song into a more intimate setting, slower, softer, sensual. I stripped back the brightness of our original and shaped it into a more personal perspective, enticing this version to be shared 1 on 1 or with that significant other” – Third Floor

“My remix was strictly for the club scene, making sure the song slams on the dance floor.  I made it a little harder and heavy but still keeping true to the original DNA of the song” – DLE

MTNS – ‘Waves’

Brisbane electro-pop band MTNS comprises of three masterminds; Tom Eggert, Robbie Hellberg and Joseph Thiang. In the lead up to their highly anticipated ‘Like A Stone’ EP, they have released a track that is certainly a good indicator of what’s to come.

‘Waves’ is a song that trudges through thick electronic productions which in a way reflects the message of the track.

“‘Waves’ is about how we experience different stages in life, with a specific focus on relationships. It’s based on how love can help us overcome things, and work through the ups and downs we often find ourselves in,” MTNS said.

Eggert’s vocals resonate beautifully throughout the soundscape embodying the ebb and flow of the ocean, as bass lines round out the score.

The track has clearly revealed more to the trio than what lies on the surface. Sometimes delving deeper into the song is what leads to self-discovery.

“It’s impossible for humans to go through life without encountering both positive and negative aspects. It’s interesting what we learn about ourselves in these different scenarios. Sometimes we meet a side of ourselves we didn’t expect,” MTNS said.

OKBADLANDS – ‘Tiny Measures EP’

After a year of writing, experimenting and re-inventing their sound, Brisbane duo OKBADLANDS – comprised of Kate Gurren and Sally Latter – have released their highly anticipated debut ep, ‘Tiny Measures’.

Their good friend Golden Vessel, who helped them draw influence from various styles of music while they explored the goings on in their personal lives, produced four of the ep’s tracks. The fifth track ‘Standing Too Close’ enlists the production expertise of GXNXVS, who helps give it that smooth shiny feel that acts like a sensual caress to the ears.

“Each song on the EP reflects our thoughts or feelings on particular matters. They personify events that impacted us personally and really helped us process them,” OKBADLANDS said.

Further developing the way in which they play instruments was an integral part in the culmination of this EP. It meant establishing exactly what they wanted to be as artists.

“Over the course of the year we both worked hard at our instruments, and began writing songs that reflected what we loved in music. We also made sure that nothing was too constructed, that we were keeping things uncomplicated and made room for what flowed out naturally,” they said.

Previously released singles ‘Dust & Gold’, ‘PTY LTD’ and ‘Mineral’ all feature on the EP having racked up a healthy number of listens already, and with ‘PTY LTD’ also scoring a spot-rotation add on Australian radio station, Triple J.

Vocally, Gurren and Latter compliment each other really nicely and share a sweet vibrancy that gives the ep light. As a whole, the ep is a really easy listen, and the perfect soundtrack for a chilled Sunday afternoon.

Erik Sing – ‘Leave You Alone’ (ft. Isabella Fortuna)

Melbourne producer Erik Sing has released a track that will round out your week and have you feeling all kinds of Zen.

‘Leave You Alone’ is a collaboration between Sing and fellow emerging young artist, Isabella Fortuna. The two met at a music festival where Fortuna was performing.

Two weeks after meeting, the pair joined forces in a hasty but wildly successful two-hour studio session to produce ‘Leave You Alone’; a lyrical exploration of a toxic relationship, which at first seems healthy.

It’s about being so attached to someone that it seems impossible to leave them alone, even when the relationship is over,” Sing said.

Fortuna’s soft tones and angelic vocals bring a fragility to the track that contrast and blend smoothly with the overall production value.

When Lady Gaga gives you that damn son look of approval, there’s no doubt the song is an instant hit. More on this in a little bit!

He’s come a long way from home but California-based Gold Coast producer Kronic has struck gold with his latest track, ‘Restricted’.

What started off as a Thursday night partying, or as Kronic calls it – inspiration – a bassline and looping lyrics “Tell me just how you like it” seemed to take shape in a hotel room at 4am.

Featuring vocals by Evan Ross – who has a sound similar to Adam Levine – was an absolute treat for Kronic. Even though Ross is a tough man to pin down, Kronic knew he had the vocal range and tone to execute the song exactly the way he heard it in his head.

“When I played him the song, Evan immediately started dancing and coming up with extra melodies. He made ‘Restricted’ his own and took the song to a more Michael Jackson-esque place than I had originally intended; all for the better,” Kronic said.

Lyrically, ‘Restricted’ is a love song to the bad girls of the world. It is the story of two people who are completely self-destructive and know they should stay away from each other, even though they can’t escape each other. It’s an empowerment anthem to toxic relationships where Kronic speaks from his own experiences.

“It’s about being attracted to the type of women you’re not supposed to fall for; the type you meet at the after party at 6 in the morning. There’s a certain stigma attached to these girls that you’re supposed to stay away from them, but those girls are exactly my type. I’m just like them,” he said.

Back to Lady Gaga. It’s a crazy story but demonstrates just how hot this track is.

“I was playing a private party and Lady Gaga was there. Trust me, I know how ridiculous that sentence sounds, but roll with it. At one point, Gaga was standing about two metres away from the DJ table. I faded out whatever Future, Migos, Travis Scott song that I was playing and put on ‘Restricted’. Within five seconds of that bassline coming out of the speakers, she turned around and gave me this “Damn Son” look complete with the type of screwed up face you pull when the drop on Skrillex’s ‘Cinema’ remix comes on. That’s when I knew ‘Restricted’ was something special,” he said.

It is clear to hear that this song has the potential for global chart topping domination, with its gutsy verses and catchy choruses, it’s an all round cohesive sonic soundscape. Press play on this dance floor starter or add it to your next road trip play list.

ARTIST BIO

The brains behind Midnight Pool Party are Sydney locals Morilla and Oliver Dela Cruz, who are together crafting addictive electronic dance music, that is infused with a rich palette of dance, electro, r&b and hip-hop influences.

Since their beginnings in 2013, Midnight Pool Party have evolved from their classic-disco style to a more mature electronic-house realm. Their recent remixes of Daniel Johns (‘Ariel Love’) and Miike Snow (‘My Trigger’), along with their cover of Frank Ocean’s ‘Thinkin Bout You’, helped usher in this new era in their sound, and there was no turning back.

As Midnight Pool Party began moving in this direction with their songwriting & production, Morilla also experimented with his vocals and lyrics, capturing what was to him a more natural-feeling sound, drawing on his influences from artists like Drake, Pharrel Williams and Anderson Paak.

Without losing the true Midnight Pool Party essence, they continue to bring an infectious groove to everything they create using an assortment of lush-sounding synths, smooth thumping bass-lines, playful key-noodling and strong infectious vocal-hooks. In 2017 they released their long-awaited debut ep ‘Dalliance’, which is pure evidence that they are indeed moving in the right direction.

The ‘Dalliance EP’ received praise & attention from old & new fans all around the globe. With key singles ‘Waiting’, ‘Vulnerable’ and ‘Collide’ collecting over 700,00 combined streams on Spotify alone, Morilla & Oliver were left feeling utterly proud of everything they had accomplished, and are already back in the studio working on new material.

Midnight Pool Party – ‘Signals’

Since the release of their recent debut EP “Dalliance”, Sydney boys Midnight Pool Party have been busy creating more of that addictive electronic dance music we’ve all come to love.

“Dalliance” was definitely a stepping-stone for the producers as it showed an evolution in their sound and image. So much so, they decided to take things into their own hands for this release.

“We are constantly growing and learning as artists, and after Dalliance we wanted to step it up. We were working with other producers in the past, but we thought it was time to take what we had learned and write and produce our next single,” they said.

‘Signals’ is their latest offering bringing us those funky, disco-electronic vibes very reminiscent of Drake’s ‘Passionfruit’.

“We wanted to create a track with a smooth vibe, but implement an MPP groove suitable for our audience and the dance floor. We played around with so many different sounds, and different rhythms and we slowly pieced everything together until it sounded right and felt right. We had to make sure that we had an emotional connection to it, but that it also made us move and shake,” they said.

The track is a dance-chiller with smooth vocals that recount a time where miscommunication got the better of a relationship.

“Whether you’ve been in a relationship for a short or long period of time, you will always have moments of miscommunication and ultimately, you don’t want to give up,” they said.

Oscar Oscar – ‘See Myself’

After the success of his recent debut single ‘Hey Ho’, Brisbane artist Oscar Oscar returns this week with his next release ‘See Myself’, which is a brooding daydream-like experience of melodic electronica.

This track was written during a busy workweek when Oscar Oscar started to get ill and lacked any sort of motivation.

“I couldn’t really find much time or motivation for intimate relationships or passions, and I was just kind of finding myself depleted and lazy after work. I guess this was me making sense of that situation and just observing myself,” he said.

This sense of introspection lends itself to understanding the mental state of men in 2017, and how a mother’s love never waivers.

“I tend to see a lot of older men who never really take the time to smell the roses as their lives get consumed by misguided urgency and menial tasks. I feel as if I was in a space where I wasn’t really fulfilling what I wanted to emotionally. I needed to take some time to consider that, and I thank my mother for always pushing me towards the things I’m passionate about,” he said.

Take some time now to reflect on the things that really matter in your life right now with the sounds of ‘See Myself’, as the synths circle smoothly and become a rather hypnotic soundscape.

elkkle – ‘Frails’

After supporting Golden Vessel on his East Coast tour, and featuring on his track ‘Shoulders’ alongside Mallrat, music lovers are really starting to pay attention to Melbourne artist elkkle.

His musical styling is so much more than just melodies and synths; his music invites you into a space of vulnerability and empathy. Sometimes confronting, but ultimately memorable.

This week elkkle gives us the second peek at his forthcoming debut solo ep with the release of his latest single ‘Frails’. Your ears and imagination will conjure up images of fragility, yet leave you feeling empowered with his strength and conviction.

“‘Frails’ is about the relationship between mental and physical health. Sometimes when one begins to slip, it’s very easy to let it drag the other one down. It describes feelings of fragility, hopelessness, and isolation. Albeit with a desire to be better. iIt’s all very grim, but I guess the last line is kind of poking fun at how temporary those feelings can be, despite how serious they seem at the time,” he said.

[iframe]<iframe src=”https://open.spotify.com/embed/album/1MSQVpiRPjYbiM0ZbOa7wV” width=”100%” height=”80″ frameborder=”0″ allowtransparency=”true”></iframe>[/iframe][iframe]<iframe width=”100%” height=”166″ scrolling=”no” frameborder=”no” src=”https://w.soundcloud.com/player/?url=https%3A//api.soundcloud.com/tracks/341926421%3Fsecret_token%3Ds-QTFHg&amp;color=%23ff5500&amp;auto_play=false&amp;hide_related=false&amp;show_comments=true&amp;show_user=true&amp;show_reposts=false”></iframe>[/iframe]

There is a real sense of mystery behind elkkle but you will be captivated by his alluring and interesting vocal tones. There’s no one out there quite like him. elkkle is an artist of the moment. If you see him appear on a tour or festival line-up, it is a must add to your calendar.

‘Frails’ is available everywhere now via Spotify & iTunes/Apple Music, as well as making an appearance on Kitsuné’s latest ‘Hot Stream’ collection.

MORILLA – ‘Impossible’

Midnight Pool Party singer and songwriter Darren Morilla has branched out on his own to create a solo project, MORILLA.

His debut single ‘Impossible’ is a tasty treat of sensual R&B electronica with the tensions of love and sexuality coming to the forefront.

The track is a very personal insight into the early stages of falling for a man, and given MORILLA’s openness about being a gay man, it comes at a time where music can heal.

“‘Impossible’ is (broadly) about putting your all into a relationship, but not knowing how the other person feels or knows what they want. As a gay man, I think one of the most important things for the ‘equality’ movement is visibility. The experiences and emotions I was experiencing were real when I was writing this song. I wanted people to know that I wrote this song when I was falling in love with another man, and show that what I experience as a gay man is no different to any other relationship. I wanted to stay true to myself and write about my experiences,” he said.

This new solo venture has been a long time coming for MORILLA. While he doesn’t necessarily think he is creating anything different, it’s his contribution to the genre that is most important, and being able to associate himself with likeminded artists.

“Other than Frank Ocean, Troye Sivan, and Sam Smith, there weren’t many other artists, especially R&B or hip-hop ones, who were writing music that I could specifically relate to as a gay man. I want to be part of the movement and to help others through my music,” he said.

MORILLA teamed up with one of his Mammal Sounds management buddies cln for his help to produce & mix this release, which end up being quite a natural and obvious choice as the two artists easily connected on the same musical wavelength. Together they understood just what the song needed to help bring this project to life.

Daily Holla – ‘the HYPERCOLOUR collection’

Gold Coast producer Harry Deadman, aka Daily Holla, is back with a full body of work that will treat any listener’s ears.

Since the success of his previous singles ‘Waves’ and ‘Yolngu’, the HYPERCOLOUR collection has been a highly anticipated release. Exploring a rather cosmic soundscape of fluid synths, Daily Holla is here to make his mark.

This collection of songs has been sitting idle for over 18 months with the writing process beginning back in mid 2015.

“By early 2016, the EP was finished. There’s no reason why it hasn’t been released until now, apart from wasted time. I sat on this body of work for ages, waiting for something to come to me. It’s annoying now, thinking back to my thought process then, but I didn’t know any better, and I definitely didn’t know the industry,” he said.

As the title suggests, this is very much a collection of songs and ideas, each reminding Daily Holla of a certain time or place. As he continues to figure out what kind of music he desires to make, this EP certainly allows the listener to go on a journey with Daily Holla’s inner thoughts and desires.

“It’s quite cool listening to your own music that you’ve given the time to grow into itself. I’m really happy that the EP is finally off my computer and out into the world; I can close this chapter and move on to something new,” he said.

Sydney engineer Jack Prest has also been a major part of the Daily Holla project from day one, and without him who knows if Daily Holla’s ideas would have been ironed out as smoothly as it has today.

[iframe]<iframe src=”https://open.spotify.com/embed/album/27oF5Dq24hA74CozWyuYvB” width=”100%” height=”80″ frameborder=”0″ allowtransparency=”true”></iframe>[/iframe]

Film is also a creative medium in which Daily Holla loves and as such, there may be a slight change in direction the next time we hear from him.

“I love writing music, and I also love film. Film has been my priority over the past year or so, and most likely will be for the next year to come, so I feel the Daily Holla project will change up a bit. No more EPs for a while; I want to write and release music when it suits me. I’d love the project to be a platform for both my music and film,” he said.

The music video that accompanies ‘Footsteps’ gives Daily Holla fans an insight into the gurgling inspirations of this ever-developing project. Directed by Liam Blenkinsop is a grainy and visually intense short film with a storyline that follows a drunken man and a hooker. A must watch not only for the technical aspects, but the ending.

“Mine and Harry’s collab was something I felt was just a matter of time. I used this project to showcase my passion for film, and to create something visually appealing on more than one level. We looked to create something really cinematic and break away from traditional uses of super 8mm motion picture film,” Blenkinsop said.

“Super 8mm has always been associated with home movies and shaky handheld footage. We were keen to put super 8’s on dollies and gimbals so we could get a look that you wouldn’t normally see on super 8mm films. Liam came up with a story and I had ‘Footsteps’ so we were like let’s actually shoot a music video all on super 8mm.” Holla said.

Tabrill – ‘Lossless’ (ft. Emily)

Fresh from dropping his single ‘Sans’, Brisbane producer Tabrill is back but this time with a soft-warping electronic track featuring vocals of a mysterious new artist known only as Emily.

Tabrill is a producer who goes beyond the surface of a track, and ‘Lossless’ is no different. Here, Tabrill goes deep into the psyche of protagonist Owun, and poses a lot of questions about his origins.

“Upon finding an old photograph, our protagonist Owun comes to the realization that the memories of his past aren’t as clear as he thought. Actually, he can’t really remember anything. Who was he in his past life? Where did he come from? What else has he forgotten? Why has he forgotten? Determined to scrape together even just a fragment of his memory, Owun sets out to find the source of the photograph. With no real idea where to even begin searching Owun just starts walking in no particular direction. ‘Lossless’ acts as a sort of inner-monologue for Owun throughout his journey,” he said.

With this narrative, it’s easy to imagine Owun’s journey. The music acts as the vessel to share this story as it is highlighted by the melting synths and pulsating melodies.

The delicate vocals of Emily sooth the ears and warm the soul; the perfect storyteller for this lone ranger.

cln – ‘Switch Gears’ (ft. pseudo)

Australian producer cln has teamed up with vocalist/rap artist pseudo on the super fresh trap-layered track, ‘Switch Gears’.

The two have been long-time friends attending school together so it made sense for them to take their friendship to new levels of creativity.

I started this instrumental about two years ago but I just had a chord progression and the piano bit. pseudo is a very talented writer and lyricist, so I sent him the rough instrumental and for about a year, we were sending stuff back and forth,” cln said.

Lyrically, ‘Switch Gears’ is rather forthcoming in terms of content with any heartbroken individual being able to connect to them.

“At the time when I wrote the lyrics, I felt like I’d been on autopilot for too long. Coming out of a yearlong relationship, the days felt stale and my nights were vividly unsatisfying. I guess it’s about that struggle to break the loop and find something legitimately fulfilling,” pseudo said.

“pseudo’s lyrical content is very unique; he brings a lot of personality to the song. I’ve worked with rappers before but I’ve never had one feature on my own track, so this song is a slightly different direction for me,” cln said.

This is a slow turn-up song with phat beats, crisp rap verses and melodic choruses. Interestingly though, this chill vibe completely contradicts the state of cln’s life during the creative process.

“A lot of the writing and production for this song was done during really chaotic periods of my life. I’m in my fifth year of university, so the assignments and exams pile up very quickly. I used this project as a way to step back from the craziness and just sit and make something relatively relaxed,” cln said.

cln has also been developing his sound composing and producing music for the Queensland Ballet Contemporary Program “Bespoke”.

Earlier this year cln teamed up with Australian songstress Katie Noonan to create a collection of diverse electronic music, which was then performed live across six sold-out performances with the Queensland Ballet as part of their ‘Bespoke’ program, under the creative direction of renowned choreographer Amy Hollingsworth, and artistic director Li Cunxin.

That project involved a lot of really weird electronic sound design, and lots of percussion all over the place. I learned a lot from that project, so I have tried to subtly apply those skills in this song,” cln said.

There is talk of a second season of the “Bespoke” performance, so stay tuned for more news on that over the coming months, as well as a digital release of the music written & recorded by cln & Katie Noonan titled ‘Glass Heart’.

Lamalo – ‘Come Over’ (ft. Hayden Buchanan)

Sydney duo Lamalo have teamed up with vocalist Hayden Buchanan on a heartfelt ode to a lost love, ‘Come Over’.

The three met at a show they were both billed on, forming a creative partnership, which led them to this release.

This track has proven to be a hit amongst audiences already as the trio have been performing it live. It made sense to release the studio version.

There’s a real sense of sadness in Buchanan’s vocals as the sorrowful lyrics cut deep. Given it draws from his personal life, there’s no wonder you listen along with a heavy heart.

“The lyrics for ‘Come Over’ tell the story of a couple growing apart as they follow their own dreams. It explores the emotions of finding yourself in a long distance relationship. It is an ode to Hayden Buchanan’s ex,” Lamalo said.

Contrasting the lyrics is a flirtatious acoustic guitar melody and uplifting synths, which balance out the sadness nicely.

Lamalo’s Michiya Nagai weaves his familiar electronic sound alongside band-mate Yossi Cascun’s guitar playing, and Buchanan’s smooth vocals. The track fuses café jazz with textural electronic sounds and acoustic elements creating a unique sound.

Lamalo and Hayden Buchanan have a really smooth flow, and this could be the start of a longstanding creative partnership.

Akurei – ‘Floating’ (ft. Nico Ghost)

Brisbane artist Akurei has teamed up with rapper Nico Ghost on a dreamy new track filled with electronic-R&B vibes.

‘Floating’ is the first collaboration between the pair, and it has certainly been a long time coming.

“Nico has been a been friend of mine since we were 16. We both grew up on the Gold Coast and met each other playing music. I’ve followed and loved his work since he started releasing music as Nico Ghost. We’ve had a few conversations about working together, but ‘Floating’ is the first time we actually made it happen. I’m really happy with the everything he’s brought to the track,” Akurei said.

The track was written about a restless night seeking closure and clarity, and given it came in the early hours of the morning, it does have that sense of being a modern day lullaby.

“Floating is a song about trying to fall asleep after waking in the middle of the night. Lyrically, it covers a sleepless night trying to find some form of closure or clarity,” he said.

The beat production is spongy and melodic, and the soft layers that build with the track are the genius of producer and good friend Max Byrne, aka Golden Vessel.

“I worked on the song with Max (Golden Vessel) while he lived with me for two months. It was really fun because we were living together and hanging out almost every day. We mainly ate a lot of Hummus and watched a lot of ‘Peep Show’ but we did manage to put this track together,” he said.

Vocally, this is a step in a new direction for Akurei as he explores a richer R&B feel. Balanced with Nico Ghost’s edgy raps and the seduction shines through.
